Vispring

Founded by engineer James Marshall, Vispring’s designs arrived in England in 1901, where expert bed makers began to experiment with new mattress fillings – such as horsehair, pure cotton, Shetland wool and luxurious finishes in silk and cashmere.

Vispring are the creators of the world’s first pocket-sprung divan and their beds now grace some of the most luxurious hotels and homes.

AT A GLANCE

About Vispring

Vispring was founded by British-Canadian engineer James Marshall, who, when his wife fell ill in 1899, created a new type of custom mattress for her, using coiled springs made of muslin. This provided an entirely new level of comfort and thus the pocket spring was born.

In 1901 Marshall’s design arrived in England and over the years Vispring’s expert bed maker began to experiment with new mattress fillings – such as horsehair, pure cotton, Shetland wool and adding luxurious finishes in silk and cashmere.

In 1932, Vispring created the world’s first pocket-sprung divan – nowadays known as the “ultimate sleeping experience”.

Vispring has since become known for its luxurious mattresses and divans, all handmade in the Vispring factory in Plymouth, UK and only ever using natural and sustainable materials.

One of Vispring’s first major orders was for the White Star Line, to furnish the suites and first class cabins on the Titanic’s sister ship Olympic. Since then Vispring has become a common sight in many of the world’s most luxurious hotels, such as the Dorchester in London and the Hotel Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, to name a couple, not to mention the hundreds of beds sold to private customers around the world.

TESTIMONIAL

“This isn’t about luxury or exclusivity, it’s just about prioritising sleep”

Materials

WOOL

Wool is globally recognised as one of the finest components for bed upholstery. Naturally hypo-allergenic and fully breathable, it is ten times more absorbent than synthetic materials — which is critical and guarantees the mattress works in total harmony with the body, by regulating the bed temperature. Unlike foam or synthetic products, it’s also naturally fire-resistant. The wool used by Vispring is responsibly sourced from within the British Isles and sheared from sheep with no harm done.

BELGIAN DAMASK

The majority of Vispring’s mattresses are covered in 100% Belgian Damask fabric, made of plant-based natural viscose, from a family run company that is Oeko-tex® certified. From a safety perspective, the mattresses are then treated with a non-chemical substance called M-Pure for fire retardancy.

COTTON

A naturally hygienic product, its breathable qualities help to keep the body cool, which also makes for a more comfortable sleeping environment.

CASHMERE

This long, silky filament is eight times warmer than sheep’s wool but significantly lighter. Vispring’s supplier is a member of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA), which promotes and oversees sustainability and animal welfare within the cashmere industry. Sumptuously soft and luxurious, Vispring add it to give their mattresses that very distinctive Vispring feeling.

VICUÑA

Perhaps slightly less well-known than the other luxury fibres, Vicuña is sometimes referred to as a gift from the Andes and is, quite literally, worth its weight in gold. Combed with care from a rare and protected species related to the llama, Vicuña wool isn’t widely available, which of course, impacts on the price. Vispring incorporate this immensely soft, microlight fibre into their mattress fillings for warmth. Sourced from remote regions of the Andes, it is 100% biodegradable and free of lanolin, making it highly absorbent and naturally hypoallergenic.

SILK

Often referred to as the most indulgent fibres known to mankind, silk is also the strongest. It is used as part of Vispring’s unique filling because of its power to insulate whilst remaining cool to the touch. The Vispring blend includes Tussah and Mulberry silk, which are odourless and hypoallergenic —  making it the perfect material for a luxurious mattress top layer.

BAMBOO

A highly sustainable crop native to China, Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth. Sometimes referred to as ‘green steel’ because of its strength and versatility, this eco-crop is entirely self-generating and doesn’t require any chemical fertilisers or pesticides to flourish. When processed, its spun fibres are soft, absorbent and naturally anti-bacterial, making it an ideal component in Vispring’s signature bed filling.

HORSETAIL

Horsetail is the longest known natural fibre and has been an integral part of furniture and bed-making for centuries. It’s untwisted by hand to preserve its inherently open structure and facilitate the air circulation. Using horsetail is like adding more springs into a mattress.

MOHAIR

Naturally non-toxic, hypoallergenic and flame resistant, mohair comes from the hair of the Angora goat. Combined with pure wool, it creates a durable fabric blend with extreme elasticity — perfect for preventing any sagging across the regularly used parts of a Vispring mattress.
